About...

Paul Baker

Waterloo-based journalist, Paul Baker, likes to think of himself as an urban bohemian, spending his days indulging fantasies of being a 'serious' writer, musician and photographer. He is actually a disagreeably honest and pathologically argumentative ne'er-do-well. Join him as he wades through this thing we call life, this city we call home, and all things despicable!

An elegy of mine...

Posted by Paul Baker on March 29, 2007 3:39 PM

Elegy tells, usually in a poetic form, about a loss or a death. It can be wistful, nostalgic and mournful.
Romantic elegy is a form I studied at university and I found that the longing for a love that can’t be had creates a singular feeling within me that I now feel almost addicted to.
That feeling can be easily evoked, usually by certain songs or pieces of music, also literature and film which can successfully transport you to this magical place.
Rather than feeling empty and depressed, I am filled with bittersweetness which can keep me enthralled.
Let me share with you an elegy of mine.

The dark side of the Skywalker...

Posted by Paul Baker on March 20, 2007 3:39 PM

I read that Buzz Aldrin, the perennial second placer, after not quite being the first human being to step forth onto the moon, has today once more gone boldly where few have gone before.
He was amongst the first to step out above that wonder of the world, the Grand Canyon, when the new Skywalk was premiered.

In praise of JuJu Spider...

Posted by Paul Baker on March 12, 2007 4:16 PM

It's time for me to say it. I'm in a band and it's name is JuJu Spider. If you want to know more then you'll have to check out our Myspace page.
JuJu Spider was named after a strange ritual wand, fashioned into a spider-like shape and found behind a football changing room - strange but true. Was it part of an attempt by a rival team to curse their bitter opponents through the medium of voodoo? Who knows, but we nicked the spider for our own musical ends.

Tired, so very tired...

Posted by Paul Baker on March 1, 2007 4:40 PM

What is it that makes me want to stay awake forever?
No matter how tired I am now, my eyes will be keen and alert come the hour of 11 tonight. Yet the reverse will be true once the alarm tickles my ears with the death knell of morning radio.
